I just received an unexpected gift from my boyfriend Paolo: an envelope from Edinburgh (Royal Mail) containing a batch of stamps depicting Mythical Creatures designed by Dave McKean. You can read about them on Neil Gaiman’s blog here and here and purchase them here.
Take a look at the photos!

Every fantasy animal has been represented in many different ways, but this is expecially true if we talk about Sirens. I was looking for medieval pictures of them and I found this XI century curious image: it looks like a strange mix with Greek Sirens (half-bird women) and mermaids ( in Italian and in other languages they are called in the same way). I started to wander how such a creature would look like in reality, how she’d fly, for example…So I made this sketch, to create my own “medieval” siren.

I made this painting this summer, during an illustration course in Sarmede. It was inspired by an inuit fairy tale, but I actually wanted to paint a woman carrying a lamp, so I think the immage isn’t strongly related to the fable itself.
Here I tried to represent Melusine, the dragon-woman of medieval legends. Some of the stories tell that, after her flight from the window, Melusine sometimes comes back to her house at night, to see her beloved children. I immagined her in one of that moments: she watched her children sleeping and she is deeply sad because she was forced to leave them.

I made this picture during an illustration course in Sarmede, this summer, and it was selected to be included in the 25th exposition Le Immagini della Fantasia.
The illustration is based on a Chinese fairy tale. The story is about a beautiful and skilled girl who could embroider wonderful animals and give them life. She is ordered to create a real dragon in a week, she had to work day and night so I imagined her falling asleep over her dragon when she finally ends.

They got married and lived happily .

e ‘a me an trat un uos ta la schena
c’a è tutta nuot che se remena.
(…and they had a big dinner
I told the story bat I couldnt’t eat
and they threw a bone at me
so my back has been hurting all night.)
